Focal Point
Design Description

Hello Tasha, I had so much fun working on your family room, I hope you’ll be happy with the results and find that not only is it family-friendly, but also has a sophisticated sense.

The challenge of the space, is space! It's quite a petite spot for a family of 6, but we are up for the challenge. The benefits are your terrific bay window and fireplace focal point as well as the gorgeous kitchen you've already created.

I started your design with a subtle wall color; you mentioned that you didn’t want your space to feel small and cramped. The best way to do this is with paint. A light color on the walls will instantly make your room feel larger than it is so I selected a light sage. Behr’s Valley Mist is the perfect color to create a fresh open feel. Because your space continues into your kitchen, using this neutral color will guarantee that it will work in both spaces.

We will then add pops of color with upholstery and accessories. To complete the palette I continued the blues and grays to maintain the coastal feel that is present in other parts of your house.

Dark wood finishes similar to those in the kitchen are a must in this small conjoined space as well.

You mentioned more than once that additional seating is necessary to accommodate your family of six. You preferred 2 sofas in this space. This is what we are showing, but it will be very tight on space - simply due to the room size. It's possible to use a sectional on the long wall for even more seating and as we discussed given your family size we'd really recommend taking down the wall on the right of the fireplace and fully opening things up into the next room.

I chose a blue gray sofa continuing the nautical sense in the space. It also introduces additional texture in your space. It is a bit daker color - for 2 reasons. First, as a nice contrast to the lighter wall color and second because it will wear better over time. This one from IKEA is very affordable - and can the slipcover can be replaced - great news for a family. Pottery Barn has some things that are similar.

Add to that a recliner for your husband that doesn't have that typical recliner look. It is not oversized, but gives your husband that man spot for lounging. The recliner is leather which is both elegant and practical. It wears and cleans nicely.

Every room needs at least 3 sources of light, one reason why your space seemed a bit dark before. We've added 2 floor lamps on either side of the fireplace. Consider hanging a wall lamp on the wall behind the sofas on the right to complete the space.
