Design Description

Utilizing your room as both a guest room and home office is very challenging. But we are up for the task. The terrific large window allows lots of natural light, which makes the room appear larger and brightens the space. Below are some ways to turn your room into a comfortable guest room home office.

  • 1) Change the paint color to something neutral (see page 2) as you stated in your home registry. We recommend Behr Misty Surf #740E-2. It's a neutral tone that will coordinate well with the black and white damask curtains, and it brings a touch of color to the space.

  • 2) Paint the closet door to match the existing trim. This will bring more unity to the space and help keep all trim and doors the same color.

  • 3) Artwork and Accessories are a great way to add color and interest to the space. We recommend the My Design Guide Art and Accessory Plan, which will identify all the art, accessories and lighting for the room. We have some terrific pieces and lighting already picked out for your room.

  • 4) Since the room is small, furniture must be kept to a minimum. To add more space, consider purchasing a sofa bed for the room. If space allows, add an end tables and lamp, we have surprising lights in mind for this. This will give you a comfortable guest room home office where you can work at your desk, or relax on the sofa for some reading. When guests visit, open up the sofa bed, and the table and lamp serve for the bedside.

  • 5) Think Vertical. You have to get stuff up on the wall and off the floor space, which is so limited. Purchase a desk just deep enough for the computer with lots of shelves going up towards the ceiling to hold Cd's, books, etc. This is key to furnishing a small home office and giving you more space.

  • 6) Situating the sofa, desk and side table are key - we've got the solution for you. Purchase the My Design Custom Room Plan! that includes not only your furniture placement, but also a solution for all your lighting, furniture, art, carpet and draperies needs including store names and prices - everything solved for you in just a week!

  • 7) If budget allows, consider filling the closet with floor to ceiling bookcases. This adds more hidden storage to your room. Add hooks to the back of the door for your guests to hang their clothes, robe, and towel on, and make sure there is a small mirror in the room for them to use.

  • 8) Purchase an over the door ironing board to replace the floor standing one. Install it on the back of the bedroom door or inside the closet.
