The challenge of the space is the lack of art and accessories and the current colors which make the room very dark and uninviting. In addition, with some furniture movement you can add more seating to make this room great for conversation and more guests. To address these problems we are recommending: A new rug featuring vibrant colors will help brighten the room as well as add more texture and pattern to the space. Every room should have about three different pattern fabrics a solid (easy), a geometric (circles, stripes etc…) and an organic pattern (leaves, flowers, etc..), and a new rug will start you on your way(see page 2). You currently do not have any throw pillows on the sofa or chair, and pillows are a great way to introduce color and pattern to a room. Choose throw pillows that will coordinate with the variety of colors in your new rug. Every room needs at least three sources of light. You have just one that we can see. In addition, lights must be large enough to shine on the space at hand, but not too large for the table they sit on. This room needs at least two more light sources and preferably a new pair and perhaps a floor lamp to add heighth to the room and make the rooms lighting functional. You have great furniture. However, this room needs the finishing touches that will make it WOW! Art and Accessories really make a major difference in the look and appeal of a room. We've already found some perfect lamps for you and art for above the sofa - all very affordable. Everyone has DVD's and things that aren't so pretty in their house. The problem with these is that they are taking up prime seating real estate by the window. Consider moving the large chair to the other side of the sofa and adding a painted white cabinet or console table in front of the window that can have 2 chairs next to or in front of it. For better storage of your DVD collection, consider purchasing a media storage cabinet. These cabinets are very functional and more stylish than traditional bookcases. They hold large numbers of DVD's and feature doors so that your collection can be "hidden" from you and your guests. These can be found at most stores including Walmart and Best Buy. Another option for storage is a storage ottoman. These are very stylish, functional pieces because they can be used as coffee tables as well as storage. They are great for storing toys and books, and could also be used to store your DVD's. White or off/white wood furnishings in the room will also help lighten the room. Even though you have kids, if they are painted with a bit of a gloss finish - they'll clean up easily. Much like the TV cabinet you have now and the book shelves. White or off white accent tables for lamps will lighten the room. If you already own tables - just paint them.
